Quick Introduction and Setup

After you have run KickKeys for the first time it places it's icon in the system tray. From that point onwards whenever you start the machine it will be there ready for you.

There are different things that you can do with KickKeys. Let us start with some easy ones. First of all let us assume you want to work with a font for whose Key Definition File or KDF is shipped with KickKeys (in case you want to use it for a different font then you need to create your KDF first. Please see Creating a KDF for that.) The fonts and KDFs shipped with KickKeys is MeghneelBengali for Bengali and Xdvng for Hindi.

Right-click the KickKeys icon in the system tray and navigate to Key Definition File. It will list all the installed KDFs. Make sure that the one that you want to use is checked by left-clicking on it. This will make that KDF as the current KDF. Typically KDFs are named the same as its corresponding font so that LipiNormal KDF would correspond to LipiNormal font. However when you want two KDFs for the same font then you need to name it differently.

Creating a document in Microsoft Word

Open Microsoft Word and open a new file. Select the entire contents of the document by going to edit and clicking on "Select All". Change the font to the font supported by KDF.

Left-Click on the KickKeys icon. You should see a Message Box which says "Successfully trapped Microsoft Word." (or "Successfully trapped Microsoft Word, WordPad." if WordPad is open too). You are ready to start.

Start typing and you should see your keys being translated to your desire. Left-Click on the KickKeys icon after you are done and KickKeys will release Microsoft Word.

Some "Do's" to keep in mind

  • Always open Microsoft Word first, choose the correct font and then trap Microsoft Word by Left-clicking on the KickKeys Icon.
  • Always release Microsoft Word as soon as you are done.

Some "Don'ts" to keep in mind

  • Don't close Microsoft Word while it is still trapped.

Creating a document in Microsoft WordPad

The steps are the same as in case of Microsoft Word.

Changing Key Mappings

If you need to change any key mapping then Right-Click on the KickKeys Icon in the system tray. Navigate to edit and then to "Edit This KDF" and left-click it. It should open up the editor window.

Go to "I want to type" field and type the key that you want mapped. Now use the mouse-click to choose characters from the left hand side of the screen into "& Get" field. For most cases you will not need to put in conditions so leave the option button at "Always"

Look in the key maps frame. It should show you all the existing Mappings. If you find one with the same "I want to type" field then you should click on "update" to update the old mapping or else you should click on "Add" to add the new mapping. Finally after you are done hit "Save" to save the changes.

How to Write Mails in Outlook and Outlook Express using Kickkeys

Just like composing documents, you need to trap the mail client Outlook and Outlook Express by clicking on the KickKeys icon.

Select the required font for your selected language. The font should be set to the one supported by your current KDF too. When you want to write in English again release KickKeys.
